Hulbert was named for the Hulbert family, pioneer landowners. Hulbert became famous for its winter deer yards. S. R. Freeman,, the village barber started feeding the deer and as a result of his efforts, other experimental feeding stations were established in the area by the State Conservation Department. A rugged ridge runs south and east from this village, located just south of the East Branch of the Tahquamenon River. Vast expanses of swampland surround the town.
